Romania:

Winter steam in Vaser Valley

16. - 21. / 23. Febraury 2019

Romania: Winter steam in Vaser Valley

Romania: Winter steam in Vaser Valley

This winter steam tour takes you to the winterly Carpathians when there is a high probability of snow. In short - the right time for photographic excursions to the forrest line in Vaser Valley.

This time we offer two tours of different lengths into the Vaser Valley either 4 full photo days, or 6 full photo days in the Vaser Valley - choose yourself, according to time, budget and interest.

Altogether we offer at least 3 different, operational Resita steam locomotives or their Reghin replica and the rustic blue railcar, built in 1960. We photograph and film the forest workers and railwaymen in their hard working day, skilfully stage the trains, experience typical forest railway scenes, organize night shots at selected photo locations and enjoy the Romanian hospitality. Up to now our winter tours were always blessed with snow and good weather in the same season, so that we would like to put our photo luck to the test again in 2019.

As I said, a photo trip not only for railway photographers. With full board, accommodation in guesthouses selected by us and all necessary transfers from/to Cluj airport. By the way, our price includes almost everything..... Compare for yourself!

Tour program:

February 16, 2019, Saturday:
Meeting of all participants around noon at the airport of Cluj. (Lufthansa and LOT offer very good connections from Germany, Austria and Switzerland to Cluj). Transfer with the Tanago tour bus to Viseu de Sus, where we will stay in a typical, cosy guesthouse near the depot in Viseu. In the evening dinner together to get to know each other in the group in the dining car of the Wassertalbahn.
Overnight stay in our selected, very good guesthouses in Viseu de Sus or in the guesthouse of the Wassertalbahn.           Meals: Dinner.

February 17, 2019, Sunday:
Trip with an authentic, steam-covered wooden train into the Wassertal valley with several photo stops. Today we are alone on the track without scheduled logging and can photograph and film extensively without time pressure.  Our overnight accommodation is today a private guesthouse, which is rented only for our group. In order to make full use of today's and tomorrow's day, we need an overnight stay outside Viseu so that we can take pictures of the best motifs of the railway in peace and quiet. In the evening a Maramuren campfire (2-3 meters high) and a cosy get-together in the firelight in front of the Resita.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 18, 2019, Monday: We follow the path of the wood from felling, over the transport with horses, over the loading with muscle power over a ramp and the transport of the wooden wagon with our steam locomotive down to Viseu. Since we are fully integrated into the production process of the forest railway, we may have to pick up additional wagons on the way and bring them down to the valley. With the long, soonen train only a few photo stops are then possible downhill.
Overnight stay in our selected, very good guesthouses in Viseu de Sus or in the guesthouse of the Wassertalbahn.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 19, 2019, Tuesday:
Trip with an authentic, steam-covered production train into the Wassertal valley with extensive photo stops. There are countless motives to discover, be it the work of the forest workers, the events around the Waldbahn, or the trains of the Waldbahn itself.
Overnight stay in our selected, very good guesthouses in Viseu de Sus or in the guesthouse of the Wassertalbahn.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 20, 2019, Wednesday:
Today we cover the next typical forest railway train, again with a Resita or the Reghin replica up to the tunnels. There we want to have our train loaded and then brought back down to the valley.
Overnight stay in the hotel train of the Wassertalbahn in Viseu de Sus or in the guest house of the Wassertalbahn.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 21, 2019, Thursday:
For those who have booked the short version (4 full photo days) we will return to the airport in the Tanago tour bus after breakfast.

Today, the other participants have the opportunity to enjoy a ride in the rustic blue railcar of the Wassertalbahn, built in 1960. Many photo stops with the focus on motifs that precede the steam locomotive only "tender". In the late afternoon return to Viseu de Sus.

Alternatively, we also offer the possibility to experience the day without any forest railway. Our "local guide" with tour bus is ready to show you the sights of the surrounding area.

In the evening we offer you night shots at a selected photo spot in Viseu des Sus with a forest railway locomotive under steam, we illuminate the scene with our lighting equipment.
Overnight stay in the hotel train of the Wassertalbahn in Viseu de Sus or in the guest house of the Wassertalbahn.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 22, 2019, Friday:
On the last day on the Wassertalbahn we plan to heat up the O&K locomotive "Mariuta" to go on another trip on the Wassertalbahn with her and a typical passenger train like the one on the Waldbahn. Many photo stops with many extras make time fly by. In the evening we meet again in the dining car of the hotel train, where we invite you to a common dinner and farewell from a surely beautiful and eventful week forest railway steam.
Overnight stay in the hotel train of the Wassertalbahn in Viseu de Sus or in the guest house of the Wassertalbahn.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

February 23, 2019, Saturday:
After breakfast we take the Tanago tour bus back to Cluj airport, from where we start our journey home.

Notes:
The travel planning is designed for maximum photo and video yield and therefore designed for dedicated photographers and videographers. In the morning we start early, lunch is served as a picnic in the train and in the evening we will enjoy the Romanian cuisine!

Supported by the commitment of private initiatives, the railways visited by us carry out fundamental basic work to ensure a lasting tourist business. Our travellers in recent years have also shown that the railways have a very positive time ahead of them, both operators and museum railways are optimistic about the future. Especially in the Wassertal valley, the railway can no longer save itself from the onslaught of "completely normal tourists" and in summer special trains are on the way almost every day.

Travel options:
The official meeting point for all participants is Viseu de Sus, which can be reached either directly by car or by train via Viseu de Jos. If you arrive by car, you can park your car safely in the fenced and guarded yard of the Wassertalbahn and in the backyard of the pensions. By train there are very good connections via Budapest. Destinations can be either Viseu de Jos or Cluj. From both places we arrange a transfer to Viseu de Sus.
Cluj can also be reached by plane: Lufthansa flies to the city several times a day from many airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We will be happy to book a flight for you; depending on the airline and departure point, the cost is around 350-400 euros per person including all taxes and fees.

For the transfer between Cluj and Viseu de Sus the taxi costs about 150 Euro per way, the journey takes about 2-3 hours for 200 kilometres. We will try to group arriving and departing participants in taxis to reduce the transfer price per person. We can also rent a local bus to ensure the transfer for all participants.

Hospitality is an important part of the country's culture. Romania is a very traditional travel destination, modern Romania is particularly evident in the capital Bucharest, while the rural areas still convey the original attitude to life. The EU's regulatory frenzy is not yet evident at every turn, but nevertheless the changes are tangible almost everywhere, even in the province a 40-ton truck suddenly bends around the corner instead of a team of horses. The infrastructure for accommodation and overnight stays has improved: our pensions in Viseu de Sus and Moldovita are simple and clean, the food there is plentiful. We will spend one night in lumberjack hostels in the Wassertal: everything is clean and practical here too. In Viseu we also have a standard gauge sleeping car at our disposal.

Experience the real Romania!

Temperatures & Technology:
In winter temperatures are similar to ours, but there is usually more snow. Please note that jackets or trousers in bright colours have never been lost on a train journey!

Entry requirements:
No visa is required for a tourist visit to Romania for German nationals, entry is possible with valid documents (identity card or passport. Please check the different regulations for your home country!

See you soon in Romania!
