Mongolia Tanago Railfan tours

Mongolia:
Eagles, Deserts, Camels

30 September - 9 October 2019

Mongolia: Eagles, Deserts, Camels

An exclusive Tanago photo trip to the famous Kazakh eagle hunters, who will show their skills with horses and eagles in the mountain landscape of southwest Mongolia exclusively for us. We will photograph the Kazakhs in their natural environment, take portraits, action shots, and have scheduled 4 days for this exclusive Tanago photography event.

Afterwards we drive into the Gobi Desert - where endless long sand dunes with constantly changing shapes and colours offer almost infinite photo motifs. Local camel drivers are available exclusively for portraits, and even at night we will use the incredible clarity and light purity of the desert for spectacular sky shots!

The Tanago tour program:

30 September 2019, Monday:
Early morning meeting of all participants at Ulan Bator airport (our trip is scheduled for Aeroflot arrival times). If you want to fly to Ulan Bator with the Mongolian airline MIAT or Turkish Airlines instead, you will arrive in Ulan Bator one day earlier. For this we arrange an inexpensive "extra day" in Ulan Bator, please contact us for your flight wishes.
Departure from Europe is always the day before, i.e. Sunday, 29 September 2019!

We move into our centrally located tourist class hotel in Ulan Bator and go on our first photo stalk in and around Ulan Bator.

Meals: Lunch, and dinner.
Overnight in a tourist class hotel in Ulan Bator.

1 October 2019, Tuesday
The equestrian tribes living in the remote steppe region near the border to Kazakhstan can only be reached by domestic flight with the Mongolian airline Hunnu Air. Their flight leaves Ulan Bator today around 6 am. On the spot we have all-terrain vehicles at our disposal, which take us directly into the mountains to the riders.
We have arranged an exclusive photo shoot with the riders until 4 October. During this time the riders, their eagles and horses, as well as their huts and tents are exclusively available to our small group for photos.

The minority of the Kazakhs in Mongolia cultivates their own lifestyle, they still live in respect with the tradition of their ancestors, who used to hunt smaller prey animals with eagles hundreds of years ago. Thanks to our excellent contacts to the individual tribes we can offer really unique photo opportunities without hectic and stress.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight stay in a simple hotel.

2 October 2019, Wednesday - 4 October 2019, Friday
The western media always reports about the "Adlerfestival", also many other tour operators offer tours there. We have participated privately in 2 of these official festivals as part of our preparation tours, and don't want to burden any travellers with these "Disney events"! Several hundred photographers are rushing on about 20 eagle hunters, there is a complete chaos, the organizers have no photographic basic knowledge of light and location. There is no schedule, barriers are erected arbitrarily and disregarded just as consistently by some "photographers". Unfortunately about three quarters of the visitors come from neighbouring China: this means ruthlessness, pushing and shouting.

That's why we decided to work with the falconers personally and arrange exclusive photo sessions with them immediately before the eagle festival. In summer it is too hot in the steppe for hunting, and so the actual season for the falconers does not begin until autumn.

During our days with the eagle hunters we are on the road with a maximum of 10 photographers! Our models have enough time to position themselves according to our wishes, we can photograph impressive portraits and scenes of everyday life in the private tribal areas under exclusion of the public. Beside the horses and eagles of the hunters we also photograph in the yurts for atmospheric pictures of the everyday life of the riders and their families.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight stay in a simple hotel.

5 October 2019, Saturday
With Hunnu Air we fly back to Ulan Bator and let the chaos of the official eagle festival begin ...
Our tourist class hotel offers the chance to relax and at the same time prepare for the next stage of our photo journey.

Meals: Dinner.
Overnight stay in a tourist class hotel in Ulan Bator.

6 October 2019, Sunday
With modern, all-terrain vehicles we drive directly into the Gobi Desert. The roads don't always correspond to western standards (although ... some roads might be covered with pot holes in West Germany), but with our four-wheel drive vehicles we can get through everywhere.
Our goal are the long sand dunes of the Gobi, which are constantly in motion and under the influence of wind and inclination always new forms take.

Even though in October the times of brutal summer highlights are already over, we want to concentrate on shots at sunrise and sunset. We will be able to photograph the dunes and the partly bizarre landscapes from all angles.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight stay in a yurt prepared for tourists.

7 October 2019, Monday - 8 October 2019, Tuesday
Also in the Gobi we have exclusive access to the local camel drivers, who will make the classic desert pictures possible for us alone or with their animals: Shadows on the ridge of a dune, portraits, the endless expanse.
In addition, we want to look into the sky at night: Mongolia is one of the light-poorest regions in the world, in the loneliness of the desert no light source pollutes the sky. Night shots of the starry sky and the Milky Way are part of it.

On the 8th of October we will drive to Ulan Bator again in the evening and check into our famous tourist hotel.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Overnight in a yurt (1 night) and 1x in a tourist class hotel in Ulan Bator.

9 October 2019, Wednesday
After breakfast transfer to the airport. The trip ends there. Individual return flight home (we will be happy to book the tickets for you).

Meals: Breakfast.

Comments:
Above all, the originality of the country, which has been preserved for centuries, is unique in Mongolia. Even if more and more people and companies settle outside the capital, the impression of total emptiness and unbelievable vastness remains. Especially in the Gobi desert we will hardly encounter any settlements.

Please note that the infrastructure of the country cannot be compared to Central Europe. Buses and road conditions do not correspond to the standard in Western Europe. Our vehicles during our stay in Mongolia are SUVs from South Korean/Japanese production. With these vehicles we can really get almost anywhere (and through). Steep hills, tearing fords, or mud and sloping positions don't matter at all. Many motives lie off the beaten track and can only be reached with cross country drives.

Away from the capital our overnight stays are on a very simple level. Not everywhere there is 24 hours electricity... Our hotel in Ulan Bator is a good tourist class house with big rooms and well functioning free WLAN.

The yurts are simple and very functional. There is usually a wood stove in the middle of the yurt, as well as a small washing facility. Electricity and electric light are available in every yurt. Most yurt camps have a separate shower and toilet house.

From the solitude of the country to the hustle and bustle of the capital Ulan Bator, it is a huge difference. Perhaps the most annoying element of modern times in Ulan Bator is the daily traffic jam on the city's main streets. On all main roads! Also we have to go through there especially in the evening after our photo excursions, it sometimes takes 1-2 hours from the city border to our hotel... In the morning we will usually leave so early that the drivers of the city are still in the feathers.

On our flights within the country we use the Mongolian airline "Hunnu Air". This private airline flies with modern ATR turboprop aircraft. Due to the size of these planes, the carriage of baggage is regulated: normally only 10 kg of checked baggage may be carried, we have agreed with Hunnu Air a special fare of 15 kg. Hand baggage is also limited, normally it can only be 5 kg, we can fly with 8 kg hand baggage.

Our trip lives from the exclusivity of our photo arrangements: we have created photo opportunities only for Tanago photographers, both in the Eagle Hunters and in the Gobi Desert. Our experienced photo guides have been on site several times and know the best conditions from their own experience.

Temperatures & Technology:
Mongolia is a windy country at any time of the year. The weather can change completely on a daily basis: from warm in summer to really cold. Expect temperatures between 10° and 20°C with the eagle hunters. In the Gobi there is only sand, boulders and rocks, at night it can get very cold here. You have to equip yourself with warm clothes especially for the night shots. The sky is mostly blue and sunny, it hardly rains. But the sun shines much more intense than in our country.

For Mongolia you need a world travel plug (adapter). Read the health information about the country on the homepage of the Tropical Institute.

Entry regulations:
For Germans it is possible to enter the country without a visa for 30 days for purely tourist purposes. In any case you need a passport valid for at least 6 months with at least 1 free page! Members of other nationalities please inquire at the embassy responsible for them.
