Bosnia the last Plandampf in Europe Tanago Railfan tours photo charter

Bosnia:
Late autumn of the steam locomotives

29 October - 2 November 2019

Late autumn of the steam locomotives

In Bosnia, too, steam operation is coming to an end. The locomotives in the coal- mines have less and less work to do, the state railroad diesel locomotives are at gunpoint and it is only a matter of time before steam will be terminated. In recent years, Bosnia has always been a worthwhile Tanago destination and our customers have never been disappointed.

This time we offer a compact and inexpensive full steam trip to the last Plandampf in Europe with many operational steam locomotives (there are still 5 Bosnian war locomotives of the 33 series available (former DR series 52) available, 3 of them operational, 62-125 and 62-111 (replica of the American war locomotive), the Skoda 19-12, and in the narrow gauge sector 83-158 and 83-157, 55-59 and 25-25. We try to get as many of the engines in front of the lenses as possible during in the 4 days of photography.

Perhaps you will experience the use of steam traction in the Balkans for the last time! This is already our fifth tour to the steam locomotives in four years to Bosnia.

Enjoy the video of our fellow traveler Claude Coune from the Bosnia tour in October 2017.

Notes:
After the civil war in the 1990s, the divide of Yugoslavia, and some economic turmoil, Bosnia-Herzegovina is now totally safe and hassle-free to visit. You will be surprised by the friendliness of the people - and their inviting character! Just be aware that you will be travelling through two ethnic regions: Orthodox Christians and Muslims have decided to live in two different parts. Beside the fact that you may see more churches or mosques in either part, or may realise that there is no pork or alcohol served in a restaurant you will not see and feel the difference.

But you have to be aware, that railways (and the entire life) does not run like a Swiss clockwork. Sometimes things are seen pretty relaxed - and while we are already hyper-active and want to get into action, our hosts prefer to have another cup of coffee or enjoy a cigarette without hassle ...
While most, if not all railway man and women stick to non-alcoholics, you will witness locals drinking enormous amounts of alcohol. If you want to stay alive, you better do not enter a drinking competition!

We have been granted permissions to all factories, workshops, depots, and mines during our trip. Nevertheless nothing is written in stone and sometimes there is another discussion needed shortly before we can enter the premises. Please be patient and relaxed: pushing it or even expressing your »anger« about a delay will surely not move our issue in calmer waters! Our local contacts are experienced guides and know our interest and the way to deal with the officials much better than we can ever do.

Please do follow the rules - even if you do not understand or accept them. All progress and all our group's permits can vanish in just a second if only one participant needs to show off.

Although our tour is carefully planned we can´t control the use of steam locomotives at the places we are visiting. Only a few steam locomotives are left in daily service. They do not run for tourism but to serve industrial enterprises. The coal mines do not worry about the kind of traction used for this purpose, if it is cheaper, even lorries may replace steam locomotives. In other words: it is the year 2019, and we are lucky that steam in revenue service survived for that long. It may change any time without warning. Steam locomotives are prone to fail, and no immediate substitution might be possible. Tanago can not do anything about it and we can not be held responsible for any change in traction that may occur.

Our hotels offer a good standard with in-room-showers and private facilities. Bosnia has been through 2 wars in recent years and there is still a lot of reconstruction work to do! You may experience laws and standards that might not be the same as you are used to at home, sanitary installation or electric wiring do not follow strict North-American or European regulations. An open yet cautious mind and a flexible approach can help your enjoyment of the experience.

The standard of our chartered transportation represents the local levels in most cases. Thus be careful wherever you are, do not rely on your Western standards and be vigilant and cautious! Insurances offer a wide product range of travel insurances and they will surely meet your needs.

One word of warning, though: if you are vegetarian, you may find that nearly everything on menu-cards is meat. And meat again. And more meat. Lots of it. Nevertheless the restaurant in our hotel at Tuzla is also happy to cater for vegetarians :-)

Expect typical European lat autumn weather: it can be cool in the mornings, but also warm during the day. Please take sturdy shoes with you, we will be »off-road« most of the time!
