Steam in Great Britain
7 - 14 March 2020

After our successful "Steam in Great Britain" Tour 2019, many customers asked us not only to visit the "big" railways, but also to integrate the smaller preserved railways into a tour program. Said & done: on this trip we will travel on some of the most photogenic routes in the southwest of the UK: the English Riviera offers everything you could wish for - with mountains, hills and sea views!

We offer this trip as a "package" with hotels and transfers, and as a "steam only trip" with just the steam charter and no further arrangements.

Saturday, March 7, 2020:

Overnight in a tourist class hotel in Paignton.

Sunday, 8 March 2020:
The regular track of the "Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company" or P&DSR for short, leads from the small harbour town of Paignton through the hilly landscape of Devon to Kingswear at the mouth of the Dart River. The route runs close to the water at the beginning and end, in the northern part even directly above the beach! Today we will be on the train the whole day and work off the photographic potential of the route in several trips! In the evening there will be night shots in the train station of Kingswear.
Overnight stay in a tourist class hotel in Paignton.
Meals: breakfast (possibly packed).

Monday, March 9, 2020:
We will turn an engine on the P&DSR today and run it from south to north, covering many new locations during the day. A late afternoon bus-transfer takes us to Reading where we have booked a centrally located hotel that will be our base for the next days to come!
Overnight in a tourist class hotel in Reading.
Meals: breakfast (possibly packed).

Tuesday, March 10, 2020:
Today we will run charter trains on the famous Midhants Railway, a standard gauge preserved railway from Hammersmith to Riddings. Although the railway is also known for its large collection of operational diesel locomotives, we will show you the first-class photo spots here with a classic steam train! Which steam locomotive will haul our train is not quite clear at the time of going to press, because the Midhants Railway also makes money by renting steam locomotives out to other preservation groups. Planning for the 2020 season in the UK is usually done at very short notice...
Overnight stay in a tourist class hotel in Reading.
Meals: Breakfast (possibly packaged).

Wednesday, March 11, 2020:
The Midhants Railway markets itself under the name "Watercress Line" - a reference to the history of the railway: since its foundation in 1884, the local farmers have used the trains to sell the watercress harvested in the surrounding rivers at the markets in London. In 1973 British Rail shut down the rail line after a significant decline in passenger numbers from the 1940s onwards, and even early diesel use did not bring a turnaround. The line become home of the Midfhants Railway, it offers so many outstanding photo spots, and possesses also an extensive locomotive and wagon roster, so that we will spend another day here with our charter trains!
Overnight stay in a tourist class hotel in Reading.
Meals: Breakfast (possibly packed).

Thursday, March 12, 2020:
Yes, we do it again: our visit to the railway museum at Didcot was one of the highlights of last year's trip for all participants: not only the broad gauge steam locomotives, but also the interesting museum, as well as the night photo session with locomotives under steam, fog machines, and professional actors offered a first class photo opportunity! For today's visit we want to add "more steam"!
Overnight stay in a tourist class hotel in Reading.
Meals: Breakfast (possibly packed).

Friday, March 13, 2020:
Our last steam train on this trip will be on the Kent & East Sussex Railway. This interesting railway was built by Colonel Stephens as a light railway and as such has an interesting history, good scenery, delightful country style stations and some unusual steam locomotives  that haven´t been seen on our tour so far. The 18,5 kilometers long line has its operating centre at Tenterden.
